There are a lot of cool things that one gets to participate in and experience as a member of the military. This past Thursday, I took Max along with me to The Dennis Walters Golf Show held at the local Air Force Base golf course. Check out the webpage to find out more about the show. But in short, the show consisted of a paraplegic who demonstrated a variety of trick golf shots. The guy was amazingly consistent ... dead straight and about 225 yards each and every time basically while sitting down on the side of a golf cart! The show was quite entertaining and it seemed to keep Max occupied.
Following the show, one of the base squadrons began holding some sort of training exercise in the nearby lake. This lake is immediately adjacent to the 18th green. Literally, the edge of the green is 20 feet from this lake and the exercise took place about 80 yards from the edge!
The exercise consisted of two GIANT helicopters (the HUGE twin-propeller type) flying just a few feet above the tree-line (the trees would bend nearly sideways under the thrust of the twin propellers) until they were just over the lake. They would drop down to about 15 feet above the water (at this point we were getting showered with mist from the lake) and 4-5 airmen would drop a raft in the lake and then jump out into the water, they would then swim to the raft and then paddle ashore and then reload into the helicopter that would land nearby. Now, keep in mind that the name of the golf course is Gator Lakes Golf Course. It's not named GATOR LAKES because of all the gold fish swimming around!!! It is quite some serious training. They made several trips around. It looked like a lot of fun. I will have to find out how I can get hooked up with an opportunity to do that!
Last night Amanda and I returned to Gator Lakes Golf Course for another event. This time we attended an outdoor movie which was preceded by free golfing at the driving range. Thanks to our friend, Cristy Tilton, it was a nice date night away from Max!!! And, much to Amanda's satisfaction, we didn't see any gators!!!!
